Conveyor Roller Selection Guide
A practical guide to selecting the right conveyor roller based on load, diameter, shaft, spacing, material and working environment.
What Roller Selection Depends On
Rollers are an integral part of Roller Conveyors — both gravity roller conveyors and motorized roller conveyors are built using rollers. Optimum roller selection is necessary to avoid undue events in the future: under-capacity rollers put the required conveyor life at risk, while higher-capacity rollers than needed increase investment and hurt ROI. The selection of conveyor rollers depends on:
Weight of the Component
How the load is distributed inside the container affects roller pitch and selection.
Load Carrying Capacity
The roller's rated capacity for the required length, diameter and thickness.
Loading & Unloading Conditions
Dropped or roughly handled loads need higher-capacity rollers than smooth transfers.
Speed of the Conveyor
Higher speeds increase dynamic loading and wear on rollers and bearings.
Working Temperature
Extreme cold or hot conditions can affect bearing performance.
Work Environment & Industry
Corrosive, humid or hygienic environments drive material and finish selection.
Distributive, Not Concentric (UDL)
It's imperative to recognize that the load-carrying capacity of a roller is distributive and not concentric. If you have to carry a pallet load of 1 ton and the pallet footprint sits across 10 rollers, the 1-ton load is divided across those 10 rollers — it is not carried entirely by any single roller.

Distributive Load — Correct
Full 500mm roller rated for 50kg means 50kg spread evenly across the whole length.
Concentric Load — Avoid
50kg concentrated on just 100mm of that same roller is not covered by the rated capacity.
Roller Diameter & Shaft
Larger diameter rollers have greater strength and can support higher loads without excessive deflection. The shaft carries most of the load transmitted through the bearings, so shaft size should be selected together with roller diameter for the intended load.
Roller Spacing (Pitch)
At least 3 rollers should support the product at any time. As a starting point, carton and box conveyors commonly use a pitch in the range of 75–100mm — see our roller pitch calculation guide for the exact formula for your product size.
Loading & Unloading Conditions
These deserve equal importance: a metallic component of 50kg can run smoothly on a roller conveyor, but if it is dropped from a height of even 50mm while loading, the roller may be damaged.
Choose by Application
Material of Construction
The contact material of the rollers plays an important role in selecting the right construction for your environment:
Mild Steel
Suits general industrial use where the environment isn't corrosive or hygienic-critical.
SS304 (Stainless)
Recommended for seashore and humid environments, food and pharma, where corrosion reduces standard roller life.
Chemical Environments
Corrosive chemicals corrode standard rollers — material compatibility with the process material should be tested beforehand.
PVC-Coated
Used where noise reduction or a lighter roller is needed.
Extreme cold or hot working temperatures may also affect bearing performance, so working temperature should be specified upfront.
