Understanding Load Capacity

Distributive, Not Concentric

It's imperative to recognize that the load-carrying capacity of a conveyor roller is distributive and not concentric. If you have to carry a pallet load of 1 ton, it does not mean each individual roller must support 1 ton — if the pallet footprint sits across, say, 10 rollers, the 1-ton load is divided across those 10 rollers.

The load-carrying capacity also has an inverse relationship with the length of the conveyor roller — for the same diameter and thickness, a longer roller has a lower load capacity than a shorter one, as the chart below shows.

From Chart to Real Application

At Least 3 Rollers Under the Load

As a rule, at least 3 rollers should support the product at any given time. Use your product length and roller pitch to work out how many rollers sit under the product, then divide the total weight across them to get the load per roller. See our step-by-step worked calculation for the full method.

Heavy-Duty Pallet Example

For a 1-ton pallet load, we typically recommend 89–90mm diameter rollers with a 20mm shaft, at a pitch of 100–120mm, so enough rollers stay under the pallet footprint at all times.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The load-carrying capacity of a conveyor roller is distributive, not concentric. If a roller with a length of 500mm has a load capacity of 50kg, that means the load can be spread evenly across the full 500mm length at once. Putting the full 50kg on a small portion of the roller, say 100mm, is a concentric load and is not what the rating covers.

Load capacity has an inverse relationship with roller length for a given diameter and thickness — the longer the roller, the lower its capacity. For example, a 60.3mm diameter x 1.6mm thick roller is rated for 200kg at 200mm length but only 130kg at 800mm length.
